Pro-Ject Stream Box E Review: The Entry-Level Streamer That Plays Well Above Its Station

Pro-Ject Stream Box E Review: The Entry-Level Streamer That Plays Well Above Its Station

Few things in hi-fi are as welcome as a component that quietly fixes a problem without asking you to rebuild your system. In this Pro-Ject Stream Box E review, we look at a compact network streamer that adds Wi-Fi streaming, Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, Qobuz, AirPlay 2, Chromecast and proper multi-room audio to almost any system. It also includes something most rivals at this level skip: an analogue input that can share your turntable with every room in the house. Pro-Ject calls it entry-level. After living with the specification sheet and the feature set, our team thinks that label undersells it.

Pro-Ject Stream Box E Network Music Streamer and Preamplifier in Black

Pro-Ject Stream Box E Review: First Impressions

Pro-Ject has built its reputation on giving serious engineering to people who don't want to remortgage the house. The Austrian brand's Box Design range has long been the go-to for compact, well-made electronics, and the Pro-Ject Stream Box E carries that idea into modern streaming.

The concept is simple. This is a small, solidly built box that turns any amplifier or pair of active speakers into a fully connected streaming system. Inside, though, it runs one of the most respected streaming platforms available today, and its analogue output figures would not look out of place on far more expensive gear.

It comes in Black and Silver, so it suits both a classic silver-faced amplifier and a stealthier black rack. If you're unsure which finish suits your system, our team at The Audio Tailor is always happy to talk it through. Call us on 1300 308 711.

WiiM OS™: The Brains Behind the Box

The most important decision Pro-Ject made with the Stream Box E was choosing WiiM OS™ as its streaming platform. Anyone who has followed the network audio world lately knows WiiM has become a benchmark for reliability, responsiveness and breadth of service support. That matters more than many people realise. A streamer's sound counts for little if the app crashes, drops off the network or won't show up when you want to play something.

WiiM OS natively supports the services most listeners already use:

  • TIDAL Connect: control playback directly from the TIDAL app, with the stream pulled straight from the cloud by the Stream Box E rather than relayed from your phone
  • Spotify Connect: the same seamless hand-off for Spotify users
  • Qobuz: popular with audiophiles for its high-quality catalogue
  • AirPlay 2: native Apple integration for iPhone, iPad and Mac users
  • Chromecast: cast from Android devices and a long list of compatible apps
  • Amazon Music and many more

The real benefit is that you never have to learn a proprietary ecosystem. You keep using the apps you already know, and the Stream Box E acts as the high-quality endpoint. For settings, multi-room grouping and the full feature set, there's the Pro-Ject Home app for iOS and Android. It detects your new Stream Box E automatically and guides you through Wi-Fi setup in moments.

"The Stream Box E continues our new streaming generation powered by the market-leading WiiM OS™, delivering fast operation, stable connectivity, and an intuitive user experience."

Pro-Ject True Wireless: Your Turntable, in Every Room

This is the feature that makes the Stream Box E stand out among affordable streamers. Around the back sits an analogue RCA stereo input. You can use it for local playback, but it also lets you share any connected analogue source across your entire Pro-Ject multi-room network.

Connect your turntable, and the signal becomes available to every compatible zone in your home. Picture dropping the needle on a favourite record in the lounge and hearing it in the kitchen, on the deck or in the study. That is Pro-Ject True Wireless. It works with other WiiM products, including the Uni Box S3, the Wireless Box E and other next-generation Pro-Ject streamers.

Coming from a brand so closely tied to vinyl, this makes perfect sense. The Stream Box E stops being a simple streaming endpoint and becomes a hub for your whole music collection, analogue and digital. A quick tip from our team: the analogue input is a line-level input. If your turntable doesn't have a built-in phono stage, you'll want to pair it with one. That gives you a nice chance to fine-tune your vinyl front end, and we're glad to recommend a phono stage that suits your cartridge and budget.

Multi-Room: Whole-Home Audio That Grows With You

Multi-room audio used to mean expensive installations and closed ecosystems. The Stream Box E changes that. Through the Pro-Ject Home app you can group multiple Pro-Ject streamers, synchronise playback and manage zones from one interface. Because it is cross-compatible with other WiiM products, you have a lot of freedom in how you expand.

You might start with a single Stream Box E feeding your main system. Later you could add a Wireless Box E in another room, or a Uni Box S3 for a compact all-in-one zone, and the system scales with you. That modularity is exactly the kind of long-term thinking we encourage at The Audio Tailor. If you're planning a two-room setup or a whole-home network, talk to our team about mapping out a system that grows with your ambitions.

Measured Performance: The Numbers That Matter

A streamer is ultimately judged by its output, and here the Stream Box E is impressive for its price. Pro-Ject's published figures for the analogue line output are:

  • Output level: 3Vrms (nominal) via gold-plated RCA
  • THD (line out): < 0.009%
  • SNR (line out): > 102dB
  • Channel separation (@ 10kHz): > 106dB
  • Frequency response: 20Hz–20kHz (@ –1.5dB)

Here is what those numbers mean in practice.

A signal-to-noise ratio above 102dB means a very low noise floor. Quiet passages, decaying reverb tails and the space between notes should come through against a black, silent background rather than a veil of hiss. You hear this most on well-recorded acoustic, jazz and classical material, where low-level detail carries the sense of realism.

Total harmonic distortion below 0.009% puts the Stream Box E's analogue stage firmly in transparent territory. Low distortion means the output stage adds very little of its own character. Instruments keep their natural timbre, and dense, complex passages stay clear instead of hardening up.

Channel separation above 106dB at 10kHz is a superb figure. Strong separation keeps left and right information distinct, which is the foundation of precise imaging and a wide, stable soundstage. Performers stay locked in place, and the space around them can extend convincingly beyond the speaker boundaries.

The 3Vrms output is also worth noting. It is a healthy line-level signal that gives your amplifier's line input plenty to work with, helping the Stream Box E sound lively and dynamic rather than thin or recessed.

Taken together, these figures confirm what Pro-Ject says: the analogue output is engineered to do justice to the quality of the streaming source.

Optical Output: A Path to Upgrade

For listeners who already own an outboard DAC, or who plan to buy one, the Stream Box E includes an optical S/PDIF (Toslink) digital output. This is where it becomes very appealing as a long-term investment. Use the internal output stage today, then connect a dedicated DAC or digital amplifier later. The Stream Box E keeps doing what it does best, handling streaming duties with WiiM OS, while your DAC of choice takes over the conversion.

Toslink also has a useful technical advantage: because it is an optical connection, it provides galvanic isolation between the streamer and your DAC. That helps prevent ground-loop noise from travelling down the digital link. If you're curious which DACs pair best with the Stream Box E, our team can steer you towards some excellent options.

Pro-Ject Stream Box E compact chassis design

Build Quality: Small Box, Serious Engineering

Pro-Ject has not cut corners on the chassis. The Stream Box E pairs a robust aluminium front panel with a metal body, and that construction does more than look and feel premium. It provides effective electromagnetic (EMI) shielding for the sensitive internal circuitry.

This has a real benefit for installation. Pro-Ject states the Stream Box E can be placed directly next to, or even stacked on top of, your amplifier without compromising audio performance. Anyone who has battled limited rack space, or heard the buzz of a poorly shielded component near a power transformer, will appreciate this.

Power comes from an outboard 5V / 1000mA DC supply that accepts 100–240V at 50/60Hz. Keeping the power supply outside the chassis keeps mains-related noise away from the audio circuitry, a sensible design approach. Power consumption is just 200mA DC, so it is economical to leave running for instant availability.

Connectivity: Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Done Properly

Network stability is the foundation of a good streaming experience. The Stream Box E's dual-band Wi-Fi (802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, 2.4GHz and 5GHz) is built for it. The 5GHz band offers faster throughput and less interference in busy apartments and suburbs. The 2.4GHz band provides better range when the streamer sits further from your router.

For quick, casual listening, Bluetooth 5.0 with SBC and AAC codecs lets guests or family members stream directly from their phones without joining your network. AAC support is especially welcome for iPhone users, as it is Apple's preferred Bluetooth codec.

Who Is the Pro-Ject Stream Box E For?

The Stream Box E's versatility is one of its strongest qualities. It suits a wide range of listeners.

The Analogue System Owner

You have a much-loved integrated amplifier, perhaps a vintage piece or a quality modern design, but no streaming capability. Connect the Stream Box E to a spare line input and you gain the full world of TIDAL, Spotify, Qobuz and more without replacing a single component.

The Separates Builder

Paired with a standalone power amplifier and passive speakers, the Stream Box E becomes the source component of a complete, contemporary hi-fi system. It is a smart foundation for a new system built around quality and simplicity.

The Minimalist

Connect it directly to a pair of active speakers and you have a clean, uncluttered hi-fi stereo setup: streamer, speakers, done. It is a refined option for apartments, studies and secondary rooms.

The Vinyl Lover Who Wants It Everywhere

Thanks to Pro-Ject True Wireless, your turntable no longer has to be a one-room experience. Spin a record and share it across your home.

The Whole-Home Planner

If you're building towards multi-room audio, the Stream Box E's WiiM compatibility and Pro-Ject ecosystem make it an ideal first step that scales with you.

The Verdict: Entry-Level Price, Enthusiast-Level Thinking

The best streaming device is the one you forget is there. It works reliably, sounds great and gets out of the way of the music. On that measure, the Pro-Ject Stream Box E is an outstanding achievement.

It combines the polish of WiiM OS™ with genuinely strong analogue output measurements. It adds the rare ability to share your turntable across the home, and it wraps everything in a shielded metal chassis you can stack straight onto your amplifier. Whether you're bringing a cherished analogue system into the streaming age, laying the groundwork for a new hi-fi, or taking your first step into whole-home audio, the Stream Box E deserves a place at the top of your shortlist.

As Pro-Ject puts it: entry-level in price, not in performance. We couldn't agree more.
