Hi-Fi Racks

Hi-fi racks give each component its own level shelf, room for air to move and easy access to the cables behind, in a frame designed to keep vibration away from the equipment. Our range covers Italian-made racks from Solidsteel, modular systems from Atacama, Montaudio and Blok, bamboo and carbon fibre designs from PlenQ, and the oak-topped Pylon Obsidian t.3.

Racks by shelf count and modular stacks

Many hifi rack designs are ordered by shelf count. Solidsteel's S series (S2, S3, S4 and S5) comes in two to five shelves depending on the model, and the Hyperspike HF, HY and HY-L in two to four. For bigger systems, the HF-4 Colossus gives bulky AV gear wider shelf spacing, and the HFW-3XL has shelves wide enough for two components side by side.

Modular racks are built from a base and shelf modules in set heights, so the rack can grow with the system. The Atacama Evoque Eco 60/40 SE2, Apollo Podium, Apollo Storm 6 and Storm 10 work this way, as do the Montaudio Manuka MR and Manuka MP, with shelves from XS to L, and the Blok Stax 2G.

Amp stands, plinths and vinyl storage

Not every component needs a full audio rack. A large amplifier can sit on its own amp stand, such as the Solidsteel Hyperspike HF and HY Amplifier Stands or the S3 Amplifier Stand. The PlenQ Bamboo Single-Tier plinth and Single Shelf with Legs do a similar job, the latter with a choice of leg heights.

For the record collection, the Solidsteel Vinyl Library VL, the LP shelf modules for the Atacama Storm 10 and the LP configuration of the Blok Stax 2G keep albums next to the turntable. If space is tight, a turntable wall shelf takes the deck off the rack altogether.

What to measure before you choose

  • The height of your tallest component, plus clearance above amplifiers and valve gear for ventilation.
  • The width and depth of each component, including the cables and plugs at the back.
  • How many components you have now, and how many you might add.
  • Where the turntable will sit, ideally on its own level shelf away from the speakers.

Questions we get asked

What's the difference between a hi-fi rack and a hi-fi cabinet?

A cabinet encloses the equipment behind doors or panels, while a rack is open. Our range is focused on open racks and stands, with some designed to look like furniture, such as the Pylon Obsidian t.3 with its oak veneer tops.

Is a hi-fi stand worth it over ordinary furniture?

Ordinary furniture isn't always designed for the weight of audio equipment, the heat it produces or the cables behind it. A rack is designed around those things, and several build in isolation, from the Solidsteel Hyperspike range to the MPOD isolation pods on the Montaudio Manuka MP. For isolation under individual components, see our component isolation range.

Can I add shelves later?

With a modular rack, yes. Atacama, Montaudio and Blok racks are sold as a base plus shelf modules, so you can add a level when the system grows. For other models, the team can tell you what each one allows.

If you're also placing speakers, our speaker stands range covers the other half of the room. Call the team or visit our Murarrie showroom to talk through sizes and finishes, and call or message first to arrange an appointment.
