Acoustic Panels

Acoustic panels deal with what your room does to sound after it leaves the speakers, and our range is all Primacoustic: high-density glass wool wall panels, bass traps, diffusers and ceiling clouds. Here is which product handles which problem, for hi-fi, home cinema, recording or meeting rooms.

What room treatment actually fixes

Untreated rooms have three habits. Sound bounces off side walls and the ceiling and arrives just after the direct sound, which can smear imaging and dialogue. Parallel hard surfaces set up flutter echo, the ring you hear when you clap in an empty room. And bass sets up standing waves, with pressure building in corners, so some notes boom while others thin out depending on where you sit.

Panels absorb the first two and bass trapping targets the third. Diffusers scatter sound instead of soaking it up, the aim being a room that stays lively rather than sounding like the inside of a wardrobe.

Broadway wall panels and acoustic treatment kits

The Broadway family is the core: high-density glass wool (6lb per cubic foot, or 96kg/m³) wrapped in acoustically transparent fabric or given a paintable face. Thickness matters, because a thicker porous panel keeps absorbing further down into the low midrange.

  • Broadway Broadband Absorber: the standard panel, in 2" (51mm) or 3" (75mm) thickness with bevelled or square edges.
  • Broadway Control Cube and Control Column: cube and column formats for working around the wall space you have.
  • Broadband 4 x 4: a 1219mm square panel with resin-hardened edges and a micromesh wrap, designed to keep fibres inside.
  • Broadway Paintable: the Control Cube, Control Column and Broadband Absorber with a face you paint to match the room.

If you'd rather not plan panel by panel, the London room kits bundle Broadway panels with mounting hardware and instructions, sized by floor area: London 8 for rooms up to 100 sq ft, London 10 up to 120, London 12 up to 150 and London 16 up to 200. The Clarity Room Kit is aimed at speech in home offices and meeting rooms.

Bass traps for corners and walls

Low frequencies collect where surfaces meet, so corners are the usual starting point. The Broadway Cumulus is a tri-corner trap for the point where two walls meet the ceiling. The Broadband MaxTrap (Corner) combines a diaphragmatic resonator with a full-size acoustic panel for three-way absorption, and the Broadband FullTrap takes that approach to a wall-mounted unit for rooms where corner mounting isn't possible. The Broadband London Kit is the corner bass trap companion to the London 8 and 10 room kits.

Acoustic diffuser panels, clouds and baffles

The FlexiFuser is 24" x 48", with six adjustable-pitch slats over a 2" absorber, so it diffuses and absorbs in one unit. The Radiator is a diffuser with a laminated wood finish that drops into a standard T-bar ceiling or hangs as a cloud.

The ceiling is the reflection point people forget. Acoustic clouds hang above the listening or mix position: the Nimbus Cloud is 38mm glass wool, the Stratus is a studio ceiling cloud for the space above a console, and the Cloud Paintables come in Halo, Hexus and Altos shapes, each in 36 and 48 sizes. For large rooms with tall ceilings, the Saturna and Saturna LP are hanging baffles.

Treatment and placement work together. Speaker position changes how hard the speakers excite the room, so settle placement on speaker stands (and any speaker isolation) before fixing panels.

Questions we get asked

Will acoustic treatment soundproof a room?

No. Panels absorb sound inside the room to control reflections and echo. Stopping sound travelling through walls to the neighbours is soundproofing, which depends on mass, sealing and decoupling in the building itself.

How many acoustic panels do I need?

It depends on the room's size, surfaces and use. A common start is the first reflection points on the side walls (sit in your chair while someone slides a mirror along the wall, and wherever you see a speaker is a reflection point), the ceiling above you, and the corners. Send us your room dimensions and we can help plan.

Where should bass traps go?

Corners first, because that is where bass pressure builds, then wall-mounted traps like the FullTrap where corners are taken. If you run a subwoofer, plan its placement and the traps together.

Are paintable acoustic panels worth considering?

Yes, if fabric colours won't suit the room. Paintable finishes come on the Broadway Paintable panels, the London 8, 10 and 12 kits, the Nimbus Cloud and the Cloud Paintables, and the Primacoustic range lists the options.
