About

Record Players

Our record players run from plug-and-play models with a phono stage built in to hi-fi decks from Rega, Pro-Ject, Audio Technica, Denon and Dual. Whether this is your first vinyl player or the replacement for one that has finally given up, the range is grouped below by how each one connects and how much it does for you.

Record players with built-in phono stages

A cartridge produces a tiny signal, and it needs a phono stage before an amplifier or speaker can use it. Plug-and-play models such as the Rega Planar 1 Plus, Pro-Ject E1.2 Phono and Pro-Ject T1 Evo Phono build that stage in, so they can connect to an ordinary line input, an amplifier without a phono socket or a pair of powered speakers.

The Pro-Ject Jukebox E1 goes a step further. The phono stage, a Bluetooth receiver and the amplifier all live inside the deck, so the only other thing it asks for is a pair of speakers. If you would rather have everything in one box, our turntable packages with amplifiers and speakers put the whole set together for you.

Bluetooth, USB and automatic models

Bluetooth lets a deck send music to wireless speakers or headphones. The Dual CS-529BT, Denon DP-500BT, Pro-Ject E1 BT and Pro-Ject T1 Evo BT all have it, and the Audio Technica Sound Burger AB-SB727 is a portable Bluetooth turntable for playing records away from the main system. For digitising a collection, the Audio Technica LP120X USB and LP120XBT USB add a USB output for recording to a computer.

An automatic record player handles the tonearm for you. The Pro-Ject Automat A2, Dual CS 429 and Dual CS-529BT are fully automatic, while semi-automatic decks like the Audio Technica LP8X lift the arm and stop the motor at the end of a side, so the stylus isn't left circling the run-out groove while you finish dinner. If there's shellac in the family collection, the Automat A2, CS-529BT and Dual CS-618Q also play 78s. Browse every option in our automatic turntables range.

Hi-fi decks and pre-loved finds

Take the phono stage out of the deck and it becomes a component you can build a system around. This is where the Rega Planar 3, Planar 6 and Planar 8, Pro-Ject's Debut and X ranges, the Audio Technica LPA2 and the direct drive Denon DP-3000NE sit, alongside specialist designs from Gold Note, Clearaudio, Holbo and Musical Fidelity. Decks without a built-in stage connect through a separate phono preamplifier, which lets you choose one to suit the cartridge.

Our turntables page goes deeper into belt and direct drive, tonearms and cartridge upgrades. Pre-loved decks are worth a look too: our pre-loved electronics range includes Rega and Pro-Ject trade-ins alongside vintage pieces such as a 1960s radiogram.

Questions we get asked

What's the difference between a record player and a turntable?

In everyday use the two words mean the same thing. Strictly, a turntable is the deck itself (platter, motor and tonearm), while the older term traditionally meant an all-in-one unit with its own amplification and sometimes speakers. We use both terms, and the range covers both kinds.

Do I need a phono preamp?

Only if your deck doesn't have one built in and your amplifier has no input marked "phono". Plug-and-play models include one, and some, like the Pro-Ject E1.2 Phono, have a switch so you can bypass it later. Hi-fi decks usually leave it to a separate unit, which you can upgrade on its own.

What's the best record player for my setup?

It's the one that suits what you're connecting it to. Powered speakers or an amplifier without a phono input point to a model with a built-in stage, wireless speakers point to Bluetooth, and a hi-fi system with room to grow points to a manual deck you can upgrade. Tell us what you have and we'll narrow it down.

If you're weighing up options, call the team or visit our Murarrie showroom in Brisbane to talk it through, and if you'd like to hear a particular vinyl record player, call or message first so we can arrange a demo. We deliver new record players Australia-wide.
