HDR-II: Twenty Years of DAC Evolution

Bel Canto's High Dynamic Range II (HDR-II) Core is the culmination of more than twenty years of digital-to-analogue design evolution — improving dynamic range, analogue output stage design, and digital filters while reducing spurious signal generation and jitter-related errors with each successive generation.

Advanced Segment Technology combines multi-bit and delta-sigma designs to produce 132dB dynamic range with linear-phase digital filters. The CMOS analogue conversion operates in Constant Voltage, Class A Differential Current mode — with large constant-bias differential currents keeping every precision resistor, film capacitor, and amplification device in thermal stasis, preserving the full dynamic character of the original recording. Ultra-Low Phase Noise Master Clocks run free from dedicated low-noise supplies, asynchronously stripping jitter from every incoming digital source.

Two Filter Choices. Your Preference.

The DS1 offers two selectable digital filter options via the main menu. The Standard filter — factory default — provides excellent sonic balance across all music types. The Fast filter focuses the audio image with slightly higher upper frequency extension and tighter bass. The choice is yours, and it can be changed at any time.

Streaming Without Limits

Bel Canto's proprietary asynchronous Ethernet input supports high-resolution files up to 24-bit/192kHz, MQA, and DSD64 — connecting to subscription streaming services or a personal NAS library with complete iOS wireless control via the SEEK app. Android users can use the MConnect app. The DS1 is a Roon Ready endpoint for seamless Roon integration. RS-232 support enables connection to sophisticated whole-house control systems.

Headphone Output

A dedicated secondary DAC with 112dB dynamic range drives the headphone output through a high-current output buffer, capable of driving 32-ohm headphones to high levels. Plugging in headphones automatically reconfigures the DS1 into a dedicated headphone amplifier — with volume controlled from the front panel and the option to leave headphones connected while switching between outputs.

Always Up to Date

Over-the-network firmware updates via Ethernet ensure the DS1 is always running the latest software — without power cycling or manual intervention.
