ℹ Product Information
Bowers & Wilkins 802 D5 Reference Floorstanding Speaker
Reference-Grade Sound for Premium Stereo and Home Theatre Systems
The Bowers & Wilkins 802 D5 is a high-end floorstanding loudspeaker engineered for reference-grade music listening and immersive home theatre. Positioned just below the flagship 801 D5, it brings many of Bowers & Wilkins’ most advanced acoustic technologies into a slightly more compact cabinet.
A Diamond dome tweeter, dedicated Continuum™ cone midrange driver and dual 200 mm Aerofoil™ bass drivers work together to deliver exceptional clarity, precise imaging and deep, controlled low-frequency performance. Its sculpted cabinet, Turbine Head and upgraded Matrix™ bracing system help reduce unwanted resonance, allowing music and film soundtracks to sound spacious, natural and remarkably detailed.
Diamond Dome Tweeter
The 802 D5 features Bowers & Wilkins’ renowned 25 mm Diamond dome tweeter. Diamond combines exceptional stiffness with very low mass, allowing the tweeter’s break-up frequency to extend to approximately 70 kHz.
By moving unwanted resonance far beyond the audible range, the Diamond dome produces clean, open and highly detailed high frequencies. Cymbals, strings, ambience and subtle recording details are reproduced with impressive precision without sounding harsh or exaggerated.
Solid Body Tweeter-on-Top
The Diamond dome tweeter is housed inside a rigid Solid Body Tweeter-on-Top enclosure rather than being mounted within the main speaker cabinet.
Physically separating the tweeter from the larger drive units helps reduce acoustic interference and cabinet vibration. The elongated enclosure is also shaped to minimise diffraction around the tweeter, supporting more accurate stereo imaging and a clearer sense of space.
Continuum Cone FST Midrange Driver
A dedicated 150 mm Continuum cone FST™ midrange driver handles the critical vocal and instrumental frequencies.
The Continuum cone is designed to deliver smooth, controlled behaviour without the abrupt resonance characteristics associated with some traditional cone materials. This helps voices sound natural, instruments retain their correct tonal character and complex recordings remain clear and easy to follow.
Biomimetic Suspension
The 802 D5 incorporates Bowers & Wilkins’ Biomimetic Suspension behind the midrange driver.
This advanced suspension replaces the conventional fabric spider commonly found in loudspeaker drive units. Its open structure reduces unwanted air pressure and mechanical noise behind the cone, helping reveal finer details within vocals and instruments.
An Anti-Resonance plug further controls the midrange driver’s movement for greater clarity and consistency.
Decoupled Turbine Head
The Continuum midrange driver is mounted within Bowers & Wilkins’ distinctive Turbine Head.
Machined from solid aluminium, this rigid enclosure is acoustically separated from the main bass cabinet. Its curved shape helps resist internal resonance and provides a stable platform for the midrange driver, supporting precise imaging and a more believable soundstage.
Dual 200 mm Aerofoil Bass Drivers
Two 200 mm Aerofoil bass drivers provide the 802 D5 with impressive low-frequency extension and dynamic authority.
The Aerofoil cones use a carefully formed profile designed to remain rigid as they move. This allows the drivers to reproduce deep bass with greater control and reduced distortion, even during demanding orchestral recordings, electronic music and cinematic effects.
With a stated frequency response extending down to 17 Hz at ±3 dB, the 802 D5 delivers substantial bass performance while maintaining speed, definition and tonal accuracy.
Upgraded Matrix Cabinet Construction
The 802 D5 uses Bowers & Wilkins’ advanced Matrix bracing system to reinforce the cabinet from within.
Interlocking internal panels reduce unwanted cabinet movement that could otherwise colour the sound. Aluminium Space Frame Bracing and an aluminium upper cabinet section further improve rigidity, helping the speaker produce a quieter background, sharper imaging and a more spacious presentation.
Reverse-Wrap Cabinet Design
Instead of using a conventional flat-fronted cabinet, the 802 D5 is formed from a continuous curved structure secured by a solid aluminium spine.
This reverse-wrap design places the cabinet opening and join at the rear, creating a smoother and more acoustically stable surface around the drivers. The curved front reduces sound reflections and diffraction, while the reinforced rear spine provides additional structural support.
Flowport Bass Reflex Technology
The 802 D5 uses Bowers & Wilkins’ Flowport™ bass-reflex system to manage airflow through the cabinet.
The port’s dimpled surface helps reduce turbulence as air enters and exits the enclosure. This supports cleaner, quieter and more controlled bass reproduction, particularly at higher listening levels.
Designed for High-Performance Amplification
The 802 D5 has a nominal impedance of 8 ohms, a minimum impedance of 3.3 ohms and a sensitivity of 90 dB.
Bowers & Wilkins recommends amplifier power between 50 and 1,000 watts into 8 ohms on unclipped programme material. While its sensitivity allows it to achieve substantial volume, a high-quality amplifier with stable current delivery is recommended to fully control the dual bass drivers and reveal the speaker’s dynamic capability.
Ideal for Stereo and Home Theatre
The Bowers & Wilkins 802 D5 is equally suited to a dedicated two-channel listening room or a premium home theatre system.
In a stereo configuration, it delivers expansive imaging, lifelike vocals and the scale required for large musical performances. Within a multichannel system, it can serve as a commanding front left or right speaker alongside compatible 800 Series Diamond centre and surround models.
Premium Cabinet Finishes
The 802 D5 is available in four premium finishes:
