ℹ Product Information

Bowers & Wilkins HTM81 D5 Reference Centre-Channel Speaker

Flagship Centre-Channel Performance for Reference Home Theatre

The Bowers & Wilkins HTM81 D5 is the flagship centre-channel speaker in the 800 Series Diamond range. Engineered to reproduce dialogue, vocals, music and on-screen effects with exceptional clarity and scale, it is designed for premium home theatre systems where tonal accuracy and seamless front-channel integration are essential.

Featuring a Diamond dome tweeter, a dedicated 150 mm Continuum™ cone FST™ midrange driver and twin 200 mm Aerofoil™ bass drivers, the HTM81 D5 delivers powerful dynamics, detailed dialogue and deep, controlled low-frequency performance. It is the recommended centre-channel partner for the Bowers & Wilkins 801 D5 and 802 D5 floorstanding speakers.

Clear and Natural Dialogue

The centre speaker reproduces much of the dialogue and on-screen action in a home theatre system. The HTM81 D5 uses a dedicated three-way configuration to separate high, midrange and bass frequencies between specialised drivers.

This allows voices to remain clear and naturally positioned at the centre of the screen, even when complex sound effects, music and low-frequency information are playing simultaneously. Its substantial output capability also helps it maintain clarity and composure in large rooms and reference-level cinema systems.

Diamond Dome Tweeter

The HTM81 D5 features Bowers & Wilkins’ advanced 25 mm Diamond dome tweeter. Diamond combines low mass with exceptional stiffness and accuracy, allowing the tweeter to reproduce high-frequency information with clarity, precision and openness.

Subtle soundtrack details, ambient effects and upper-frequency harmonics remain clean and well defined. The tweeter’s extended performance also helps prevent the treble from sounding compressed or harsh during demanding cinematic passages.

Solid Body Tweeter-on-Top

Rather than mounting the tweeter inside the main cabinet, Bowers & Wilkins places it within a rigid Solid Body Tweeter-on-Top enclosure.

Separating the tweeter from the larger midrange and bass drivers helps isolate it from cabinet vibration. Its elongated housing is designed to reduce acoustic diffraction around the tweeter, supporting more precise imaging and a clearer connection between dialogue and the action on screen. The HTM81 D5 shares this technology with the wider 800 Series Diamond range.

Dedicated Continuum Cone Midrange Driver

A 150 mm Continuum cone FST midrange driver handles the critical vocal and instrumental frequencies.

The driver is decoupled from the main enclosure to minimise interference from the twin bass drivers. This helps voices sound more natural and focused while preserving subtle tonal details in film scores, soundtracks and multichannel music.

Biomimetic Suspension

The midrange driver incorporates Bowers & Wilkins’ Biomimetic Suspension technology.

This open suspension structure is designed to reduce unwanted air pressure and colouration associated with a traditional fabric spider. By allowing the midrange driver to operate with fewer mechanical disturbances, the HTM81 D5 can reproduce dialogue and instruments with greater transparency.

An Anti-Resonance plug provides further control over driver behaviour, helping maintain clarity during demanding or high-volume scenes.

Twin 200 mm Aerofoil Bass Drivers

Two substantial 200 mm Aerofoil bass drivers give the HTM81 D5 the scale and authority required to match the 801 D5 and 802 D5.

Aerofoil cone technology combines a carbon-fibre skin with a variable-profile foam core to balance low mass with high stiffness. This construction helps the bass drivers remain controlled as they move, producing deep, powerful low frequencies with reduced distortion.

With a frequency response extending down to 28 Hz at ±3 dB, the HTM81 D5 can reproduce substantial bass information from voices, music and cinematic effects while integrating with compatible subwoofers in a complete home theatre system.

Advanced Matrix Cabinet Construction

The HTM81 D5 incorporates Bowers & Wilkins’ Matrix™ internal bracing system.

This reinforced internal structure helps reduce unwanted cabinet vibration that could otherwise colour the sound. By providing a more stable acoustic foundation for the drive units, Matrix construction supports cleaner dialogue, improved definition and more accurate placement of sound across the front stage.

Flowport Bass Reflex Technology

Bowers & Wilkins’ Flowport™ bass-reflex technology helps manage airflow through the cabinet.

The carefully shaped port is designed to reduce turbulence and unwanted port noise as air enters and exits the enclosure. This supports cleaner bass reproduction and helps the HTM81 D5 maintain control during demanding action scenes and high-volume playback.

Designed to Match the 801 D5 and 802 D5

The HTM81 D5 is designed as the centre-channel partner for the Bowers & Wilkins 801 D5 and 802 D5 floorstanding speakers.

Its 150 mm Continuum midrange driver and twin 200 mm Aerofoil bass drivers closely align with the driver configuration of the 802 D5. This helps create consistent tonal character as dialogue, effects and music move between the left, centre and right channels.

Optional FS-HTM Floor Stand

The HTM81 D5 can be positioned on the optional Bowers & Wilkins FS-HTM floor stand.

Designed specifically for compatible 800 Series Diamond centre speakers, the stand provides a stable foundation and positions the speaker at an appropriate height beneath a television or projection screen. The FS-HTM is available in Black and Titanium finishes and is sold separately.

The Bowers & Wilkins HTM81 D5 is available in three premium cabinet finishes:
