ℹ Product Information
Ten years in development. 0.0002% THD+N. 113dB SNR. A proprietary fully electronic volume control with 1000-step 0.1dB resolution. Fully discrete, dual-mono, pure Class A. The Electrocompaniet EC 5 is the ultimate expression of preamplifier purity — a masterpiece that redefines signal integrity while honouring Electrocompaniet's classic design aesthetic.
The Ultimate Expression of Preamplifier Purity
There are preamplifiers. And then there is the Electrocompaniet EC 5. After ten years of painstaking development, Electrocompaniet has unveiled a preamplifier that does not simply refine what came before — it redefines what a preamplifier can be. Through groundbreaking proprietary technologies and an architectural philosophy of absolute signal integrity, the EC 5 sets a new reference point for transparency, imaging, and musical truthfulness — while honouring the classic Electrocompaniet design aesthetic with meaningful and considered upgrades.
This is the ultimate expression of preamplifier purity.
A Decade of Development — One Proprietary Volume Control
The most remarkable innovation in the EC 5 is a technology ten years in the making: a proprietary, fully electronic volume control that eliminates every mechanical switch, relay, and stepped attenuator contact path from the audio signal. This is not a trivial achievement. Conventional volume controls — whether mechanical potentiometers, switched resistor ladders, or relay-based attenuators — all change the electrical topology of the signal path as the volume setting changes. Different attenuation levels introduce different impedances, phase shifts, and signal path lengths, subtly but measurably altering the way the signal arrives at the output.
The EC 5's proprietary volume control eliminates this entirely. Across its 1000 steps of approximately 0.1dB resolution, the signal path length, impedance, and phase behaviour remain constant regardless of the volume setting. The electrical characteristics do not change. The imaging cues — timing, phase, spatial positioning — remain absolutely stable from the quietest whisper to the loudest orchestral climax. The electronics disappear, and the recording's spatial information is preserved intact.
The result — when combined with quality amplification and speakers — is a more consistent staging, stable instrument placement, and preserved holographic depth at every listening level. Very fine, repeatable 0.1dB steps allow absolute level setting without upsetting channel balance or relative microdynamics, keeping the soundstage centre, depth, and instrument positions precisely where the recording placed them.
Fully Discrete, Dual-Mono, Pure Class A — The EC 5 Architecture
The EC 5's volume control operates within an architecture built to extract every last degree of performance from its remarkable specification. A fully discrete, balanced, dual-mono circuit operates in pure Class A throughout — with independent power supplies per channel and heavy storage capacitance ensuring that each channel's power delivery is isolated, stable, and immune to the demands of the other.
Electrocompaniet's AmpliWire topology — characterised by high open-loop bandwidth and deliberately low negative feedback — reduces distortion naturally, maintains phase coherence across the audible frequency range, and preserves the channel separation that creates convincing spatial imaging. At 0.0002% THD+N and 113dB SNR, with a frequency response extending from 0.5Hz to 450kHz, the EC 5's measurements confirm what its design philosophy promises: a preamplifier that adds nothing to the signal and removes nothing from it.
The dual-mono layout and strong channel isolation minimise crosstalk to vanishing levels, so left/right separation remains vivid even at low playback levels — critical for depth perception and the lateral imaging that places instruments convincingly within a three-dimensional soundstage. The EC 5 does not create a soundstage. It reveals the one that was already there.
Signal Integrity at Every Level
Everything about the EC 5 is in service of signal integrity. Unlike volume implementations that change attenuation topology, insert switching contacts, or introduce varying impedance and phase shifts at different settings, the EC 5's constant-topology approach ensures the electronics truly disappear. What you hear is not the preamplifier — it is the recording. The musicians. The room. The microphones. The performances.
After ten years of development, Electrocompaniet has built a preamplifier worthy of that ambition.
Feature Cards
🎛️ Proprietary Volume Control — 1000 Steps, 0.1dB Resolution
A decade in development — a fully electronic volume control that eliminates all mechanical switches, relays, and contact paths from the signal. Constant topology, constant impedance, constant phase behaviour across all 1000 steps. Stable imaging at every listening level.
⚡ Fully Discrete Dual-Mono Pure Class A
Independent power supplies per channel, heavy storage capacitance, and Electrocompaniet's AmpliWire high open-loop-bandwidth topology — delivering 0.0002% THD+N, 113dB SNR, and a frequency response of 0.5Hz to 450kHz.
🎵 Holographic Depth at Every Volume
Constant signal path means imaging cues — timing, phase, spatial positioning — remain stable from the quietest listening level to room-filling volume. Instrument placement, soundstage depth, and holographic presence preserved intact at every setting.
🏆 Ten Years of Painstaking Development
The EC 5 is not an iteration. It is a redefinition — the product of a decade of engineering commitment to the ultimate expression of preamplifier purity, honouring Electrocompaniet's classic design aesthetic with truly meaningful technological advancement.
