Reimagining the Iconic Musical Fidelity X-Profile

The X-Power revives one of Musical Fidelity's most beloved design signatures — the classic X-profile — in a product that addresses one of the most overlooked yet impactful aspects of any high-end audio system: the quality of the mains power it runs on.

The quality of mains electricity is declining. The proliferation of switch-mode power supplies, energy-saving lighting, Ethernet networking and other sources of electrical pollution means that today's mains supply is significantly noisier than it once was — and that noise finds its way directly into sensitive audio circuits, degrading performance in ways that no amount of component upgrading can fully address. The X-Power is the solution: a single-inlet, single-outlet power conditioner that combines three essential protection and filtration technologies in one beautifully engineered unit.

It is an absolute rarity to find all three elements — surge protection, EMI/RFI filtration and DC blocking — in a single power conditioner, especially at this price point. The X-Power changes that.

Three Stages of Protection and Filtration

1. Dual-Stage Surge & Overvoltage Protection

Voltage surges — caused by lightning strikes, power grid fluctuations or sudden changes in electrical loads — can cause catastrophic or cumulative damage to audio equipment. The X-Power's multi-stage design employs two surge and overvoltage protection stages: one at the input and one at the output. Excess voltage is diverted away from connected devices before it can reach and damage your valuable audio components, providing genuine peace of mind and potentially saving costly repairs or replacements.

2. Bespoke EMI/RFI Filter — Up to 80dB Attenuation

Electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radio frequency interference (RFI) contaminate the mains supply and find their way into audio circuitry, causing noise, distortion and a loss of resolution. The X-Power uses a bespoke EMI filter comprising two common-mode chokes with common-mode and differential-mode capacitors, followed by a further stage of overvoltage protection.

The results are extraordinary. At 100kHz, attenuation is already approaching -60dB. From 600kHz onwards, attenuation exceeds -70dB. At 1MHz, the X-Power achieves more than -80dB of attenuation — figures that are, in Musical Fidelity's own words, absolutely unique at this price point.

3. DC Blocker — Up to 2V

DC offset — unwanted DC voltage superimposed on the AC mains signal — is a frequently overlooked problem in audio systems. Even a small amount of DC can saturate the core of a power transformer, causing audible mechanical vibrations, reducing transformer efficiency and introducing distortion into the audio signal. Not all amplifiers and preamplifiers include DC blocking as a standard feature, making an external DC blocker an essential addition to any sensitive audio system.

The X-Power employs a meticulously designed network of diodes and electrolytic capacitors to effectively block DC components of up to 2V while allowing the AC signal to pass through cleanly and without impediment.

The X-Power in Your System

Sources: The X-Power is ideal for supplying clean power to CD players, phono preamplifiers, preamplifiers, DACs, streamers and other source components. When used with a high-quality unfiltered power strip, its 10A rating allows six or more source components to be connected simultaneously — equivalent to a maximum throughput of 2,300W at 230V.

Amplifiers: The X-Power works equally well with integrated and power amplifiers. Musical Fidelity recommends connecting one amplifier per X-Power. At 230V, the 10A rating accommodates:

• Class AB amplifiers up to approximately 2×700W
• Class A amplifiers up to 2×550W
• Tube amplifiers up to 2×200W

Important note: Musical Fidelity strongly recommends keeping digital and analogue source devices on separate X-Power units to avoid cross-contamination between digital noise and sensitive analogue circuitry.
