The RB880 Tonearm — Planar 8 Engineering in a Planar 6

The RB880 is not a tonearm you would normally find on a Planar 6. Borrowed directly from the next-tier model, it features Rega's ultra-low friction precision bearings, hand-polished bearing housings, and is fitted with a custom stainless balance weight — a component normally reserved for the Planar 8. The result is a tonearm with the resolution, rigidity, and tracking precision to extract everything the Ania MC has to offer, with nothing left behind.

The Ania — Welcome to the World of Moving Coils

The Rega Ania was inspired by the success of Rega's Apheta and Aphelion MC designs — sharing the same complex hand-wound micro coil found throughout the range, and bringing true moving coil performance to a broader audience without compromising on the engineering principles that make Rega cartridges exceptional.

At its heart is one of the world's smallest MC generators — an iron micro cross assembly, hand wound with 0.018mm fine wire, powered by cutting-edge high-power neodymium magnets. The cantilever is aluminium, with an elliptical profile stylus. The combination delivers the three-dimensional imaging, musical speed, and low-level detail retrieval that moving coil design makes possible — in a package that tracks at just 1.75–2.00 grams and loads perfectly into a 100Ω MC phono stage.

The Ania's body is a feat of engineering in its own right. When the Apheta 3's machined aluminium body proved too expensive for the Ania's target price point, Rega's engineers chose Polyphenylene Sulphide (PPS-Fortron) — a 40% glass-filled polymer of extraordinary hardness and dimensional stability, processed through the most complex high-pressure injection mould Rega has ever designed. Made exclusively by specialist toolmakers working to military and medical precision tolerances, the mould tool alone took a full year to develop. The result is a body of exceptional rigidity and accuracy, with Rega's three-point fixing system for automatic overhang alignment when fitted to a Rega tonearm.

A CAD-designed clear rigid cover protects the internal fine wires during fitting, making installation safe and risk-free.

The Ania is a moving coil cartridge — to perform at its best, it needs a quality MC phono stage. The Rega Fono MC Mk4 is the natural partner, and Rega's own recommended complement to the Ania.

Designed and built in the same Southend-on-Sea factory, the Fono MC Mk4 uses a Linear Systems LSK389 FET all-discrete input stage — chosen for its ultra-low noise and linearity — paired with a MUSE operational amplifier in the RIAA equalisation circuit and polypropylene capacitors throughout the signal path. The result is an exceptionally quiet, musically transparent phono stage that gets out of the way and lets the Ania do what it was built to do.

Factory DIP switch settings are pre-configured for all Rega MC cartridges: 100Ω input loading, 1000pF capacitance, and high gain (63.5dB) — a plug-and-play match for the Ania's 10Ω output impedance and 350μV nominal output. Full adjustability via rear-panel DIP switches (four resistance settings, two capacitance, two gain) makes it compatible with a wide range of third-party MC cartridges too.

The Fono MC Mk4 shares its new aluminium casework with the Neo Mk2 PSU and Fono MM Mk5 — meaning it sits alongside your turntable's power supply as a cohesive, matched visual pair.
