8" FlatPiston Driver — Purpose-Built for Planar

At the heart of the PL-2's driver system is REL's 8" FlatPiston driver — a purpose-engineered active driver designed specifically for the Planar platform and its unique boundary-coupled architecture. The FlatPiston design delivers the fast, detailed bass transients that define REL's musical character, with the rigidity and low-colouration performance needed to match the demands of the PL-2's powerful amplifier stage.

Boundary-Coupled Bass — 10" FibreAlloy Passive Radiator

A specially tuned 10" passive radiator — built with a FibreAlloy cone on a steel chassis — fires toward the wall behind the PL-2, using boundary effect coupling to reinforce and dramatically expand low-frequency output. The wall becomes an active participant in the acoustic system, multiplying the effective output and extending bass to -6dB at 24Hz in-room — a remarkable achievement for a cabinet only 144mm deep.

The result is deep, room-filling bass with genuine scale and authority — performance that competes with far larger, floor-standing subwoofer designs.

550W RMS Pure Class D Amplifier

A 550W RMS Pure Class D amplifier powers the PL-2 with the headroom and authority to fully exploit the boundary-coupled driver system in larger rooms and open living spaces. Class D efficiency ensures minimal heat generation within the ultra-compact chassis, while the high power reserves deliver dynamic headroom that keeps bass controlled and articulate even during demanding musical and cinematic passages.

Built-In Airship Direct Wireless

Airship Direct wireless technology is built into the PL-2 as standard — the receiver unit comes pre-installed on the subwoofer. This eliminates the practical challenge of routing a cable from your amplifier or AV receiver to a wall-mounted or near-wall subwoofer, and allows the PL-2 to be positioned wherever it performs best without compromise.

VIMAR Vibration Isolation

To manage the interaction between the cabinet and the wall, the PL-2 incorporates REL's VIMAR (Vibration Isolation Material and Resonance Control) system, integrated into the mounting brackets. VIMAR reduces the transfer of unwanted energy into the wall surface while preserving the speed and integrity of the bass — delivering cleaner, more controlled low-frequency performance regardless of wall construction or mounting conditions.
