First introduced in 1967, the original DENTON was Wharfedale's answer to a changing hi-fi landscape — a compact loudspeaker delivering natural sound, fine craftsmanship and outstanding value. The DENTON 1 followed in 1974 with a radical new styling that stepped away from the traditional wooden-box aesthetic towards a more forward-looking late modernist design. That same spirit of confident reinvention defines the DENTON 1S — playful yet technically serious, contemporary yet unmistakably Wharfedale.

Coaxial Precision — One Acoustic Centre

At the heart of the DENTON 1S is a brand-new, purpose-built coaxial driver — a sophisticated two-way system that positions a 25mm silk-dome tweeter concentrically within a 165mm advanced polypropylene cone. By allowing both drivers to radiate from a single acoustic centre, the DENTON 1S achieves inherent time alignment and phase coherence that conventional two-way designs simply cannot match.

The result is a remarkably unified presentation: stable stereo imaging, a wide and immersive soundstage, and consistent tonal balance across a broad listening area. Whether seated centrally or well off-axis, the DENTON 1S delivers a smooth, coherent sound that defies its compact dimensions. The coaxial configuration also enables a smaller, more rigid cabinet with minimal front-baffle interruption — enhancing structural integrity while contributing to the speaker's clean, refined aesthetic.

Tuned for Musical Coherence

Development of the DENTON 1S was led by Wharfedale's Director of Acoustic Design, Peter Comeau, with particular emphasis on crossover integration. Through extensive acoustic modelling and critical listening evaluation, the crossover network — set at 2.6kHz — has been engineered to ensure the drivers operate as a truly unified system. The result is a loudspeaker that sounds natural, balanced and free from tonal discontinuities. Music flows with convincing timing, scale and dynamic expression without fatigue — qualities more often associated with significantly larger loudspeakers.

Big Sound from a Compact Cabinet

Despite its modest footprint, the DENTON 1S delivers impressive low-frequency authority. A carefully tuned bass reflex enclosure with an optimised 11.5-litre internal volume enables bass extension down to 45Hz (-6dB) — exceptional performance for a compact standmount speaker. Bass is warm, textured and controlled, while the advanced polypropylene cone material offers improved rigidity, low mass and controlled self-damping for fast transient response and low midrange colouration.

High frequencies are smooth and detailed, aided by the silk-dome tweeter's damped rear chamber and high-flux motor system. With 88dB sensitivity and a benign 8Ω nominal impedance, the DENTON 1S is easily driven by a wide range of amplifiers — from classic integrated amplifiers to modern streaming amplifiers — making it a genuinely flexible partner for any system.

Stand, Shelf or Wall — The "Brilliance" EQ Switch

The DENTON 1S has been engineered for real-world placement flexibility. Primarily designed as a standmount loudspeaker, it also supports shelf-mounted and on-wall installations. A discreet rear 3/8" (9.5mm) thread mounting point allows secure wall installation, while a specially engineered rear-panel "Brilliance" EQ switch provides subtle tonal adjustment to optimise performance for free-space, shelf-mounted or near-wall positioning.
