Our thoughts

Hands-on analog tuning from 0.5 to 29.9 MHz makes this a receiver for listeners who like to work the dial themselves. It covers shortwave, medium wave, AM, SSB and CW in one vintage chassis.

The Wadley Loop oscillator is designed to hold frequency steady, which matters on SSB and CW, where drift makes signals hard to hold. The receiver is specified at ±500 Hz once warmed up. Spring terminals take antennas below 1.6 MHz and an SO-239 takes them above, so the antenna set-up has two different connections to work with.

Best suited to shortwave and SSB enthusiasts, CW operators and collectors who want a classic receiver with mains or DC power options. The Yaesu Musen FRG-7 is a vintage solid-state communications receiver, renowned for its robust performance and reliability. Manufactured between 1976 and 1980, it offers a wide frequency coverage from 0.5 MHz to 29.9 MHz, encompassing shortwave and medium wave bands.

Utilizing a triple conversion superheterodyne design with the Wadley Loop oscillator, the FRG-7 ensures stable frequency reception and minimal drift. It supports AM, SSB, and CW modes, making it versatile for various communication needs.

The receiver's analog tuning provides a continuous frequency range with 10 kHz readout, and its front-end features include an automatic noise limiter (ANL), DX/Local switch, and tone control switch. For enthusiasts seeking enhanced precision, an optional fine-tuning modification is available.
