Gold Note PH-5.2 Review: The MM/MC Phono Preamplifier That Honours Every Groove
Welcome to our Gold Note PH-5.2 review, where we look closely at one of the most thoughtfully engineered phono stages to come out of Florence in years. The Gold Note PH-5.2 MM/MC Phono Preamplifier is a fully discrete, dual-output design with a colour touchscreen, three selectable equalisation curves (each with an Enhanced mode extending to 50kHz), nine input impedance settings, two cartridge memories and both balanced XLR and RCA outputs. Gold Note calls it a complete design evolution rather than a simple update of its predecessor. After spending time with its feature set and design philosophy, we agree. This is what a serious phono stage looks like.

The Philosophy: Fidelity as a Responsibility
"The PH-5.2 is the mature expression of Gold Note's vision of analog: high fidelity is not a sound signature, but a responsibility towards the original recording." — Gold Note
That line explains the PH-5.2. Plenty of phono stages are voiced to sound a certain way, perhaps a little warm, a little forward or a touch romantic. Gold Note's goal is different. It wants to rebuild the original context of each recording as accurately as possible, whether that's a 1950s Decca pressing or a modern 180g audiophile reissue.
The PH-5.2 draws direct lineage from Gold Note's flagship PH-1000 and PH-10 phono stages. It brings that thinking into a more compact and accessible chassis without sacrificing the features that make those designs so flexible. At 200 × 80 × 260mm and 1.2kg, it fits neatly into almost any rack. It carries far more capability than its footprint suggests.
A Complete Design Evolution: Chassis, Power Supply and Interface

New Black Anodised Sandblasted Aluminium Chassis
The PH-5.2 introduces the new aesthetic language of Gold Note's Linea 5.2 range. It wears a black anodised, sandblasted aluminium chassis that looks understated and premium. The enclosure isn't only about looks, though. It's designed to minimise interaction with magnetic fields, which gives the circuitry a more stable electrical and mechanical environment.
This matters a great deal in a phono stage. A low-output moving coil cartridge may deliver only a fraction of a millivolt, and the PH-5.2's input sensitivity reaches down to 0.1mV. At those signal levels, every bit of stray EMI or magnetic interference gets amplified along with the music. Gold Note says the new chassis brings lower background noise, better micro-detail and a more natural, composed character. These are exactly the qualities that let a soundstage open up and decays trail off into true silence.
Enhanced Power Supply
Every great amplification stage depends on its power supply, and the PH-5.2's new enhanced supply is central to its performance. According to Gold Note, it brings:
- greater dynamic control
- a cleaner high range
- a relaxed yet authoritative presentation
- consistency and coherence in dynamically complex passages
That last point is where many phono stages fall short. Orchestral crescendos, dense big-band arrangements and heavily layered rock mixes can make a less capable design sound congested. The PH-5.2 is built to stay composed when the music gets busy. Its quoted 105dB dynamic response backs this up, with headroom to spare for the leading edges of transients.
Colour Touchscreen: The Interface Serves the Music
The colour touchscreen gives you a clear layout, quick adjustments and immediate access to every function, including load, gain and equalisation. Crucially, you can make these changes without interrupting playback.
Anyone who has fine-tuned a cartridge knows why this is valuable. On many phono stages, changing load means powering down, pulling the unit out and flipping DIP switches, often on the rear or underside. By the time the music is playing again, your auditory memory of the previous setting has faded. On the PH-5.2, you can switch between 100Ω and 220Ω in real time on the same passage and hear the difference immediately. That's a powerful tool for dialling in your system.
Purists needn't worry. All setting changes are executed by high-quality relays, so no digital circuitry enters the audio path. The touchscreen is a control surface only, and the signal stays analogue from input to output.
Authentic Analogue Purity: Discrete Throughout

The PH-5.2's audio signal path is built entirely from discrete components. Gold Note has laid out the circuit to keep signal distances short and eliminate potential interference at every stage. Short, direct signal paths reduce opportunities for noise pickup and parasitic effects. Discrete circuits also give the designer full control over every gain stage and its operating point, rather than relying on the compromises built into a generic op-amp.
On paper, the results look impressive:
- Frequency response: 20Hz–20kHz (±0.3dB), extending to 50kHz (±0.3dB) in Enhanced mode
- THD: < 0.05% @ 1kHz
- Signal-to-noise ratio: 89dB
- Dynamic response: 105dB
A ±0.3dB tolerance across the audible band points to tight RIAA conformance. Your tonal balance is set by the record and the cartridge, not by EQ errors in the preamp. As Gold Note puts it, what you hear is the cartridge, the record and the music.
Three EQ Curves: Playing Vintage Vinyl the Way It Was Cut
This is where the PH-5.2 sets itself apart from almost everything else in its class, and where serious collectors should pay close attention.
Not every record was equalised to the RIAA standard. Before RIAA became the universal standard in 1954, labels used their own equalisation curves, each with different bass and treble characteristics. If you play a pre-RIAA Decca or Columbia pressing through a standard phono stage, the tonal balance will be off. You may hear thin or bloated bass, or treble that sounds dull or overly bright. It isn't how the cutting engineer intended you to hear it.
The PH-5.2 offers three selectable curves:
- RIAA: for post-1954 pressings and the vast majority of modern vinyl
- Decca London: for vintage Decca and London label releases
- American Columbia: for vintage Columbia pressings
With these options, you can play records from any era and any label with the balance, dynamics and character the cutting engineer intended. If your collection includes early jazz, classical or mono-era pressings, this feature alone could transform records you'd written off as "just sounding a bit old".
Enhanced Mode: Inspired by Georg Neumann
Each curve is also available in an Enhanced version. This is Gold Note's proprietary technology, inspired by the studies of Georg Neumann, the legendary name behind so much of the cutting and recording equipment that shaped the vinyl era. Enhanced mode extends the frequency response up to 50kHz, adding dynamics, extension and realism to recordings that reward it.
In practice, you get six equalisation options: three curves in standard and Enhanced forms. That gives you the freedom to tailor playback to each pressing, which is ideal for listeners who enjoy experimenting and getting the very best from every record on the shelf.

Cartridge Matching: Nine Impedance Settings and Flexible Gain

Input Impedance: 10Ω to 47kΩ
The PH-5.2 offers nine input impedance settings: 10Ω, 22Ω, 47Ω, 100Ω, 220Ω, 470Ω, 1000Ω, 22kΩ and 47kΩ. That's an unusually fine set of steps for low-output MC cartridges, where loading has a big effect on the sound.
Loading an MC cartridge changes its electrical damping, and you hear the result in the treble and in the sense of air and focus. Too high a load can make some cartridges sound bright or edgy. Too low can make them sound closed-in and dull. A useful starting point is to load several times above the cartridge's internal impedance, then fine-tune by ear. With nine positions and real-time switching from the touchscreen, the PH-5.2 makes that process easy and enjoyable.
For MM cartridges, the 47kΩ setting covers the industry standard. The 22kΩ option gives you a gentler alternative for designs that benefit from it, and MM capacitance is set at 220pF.
Gain: 40dB MM / 60dB MC with Four Adjustment Steps
Base gain is fixed at 40dB for MM and 60dB for MC. Each can be adjusted by 0dB, +3dB, +6dB or -6dB. That gives you an effective MC range of 54dB to 66dB and an MM range of 34dB to 46dB.
This flexibility matters. A very low-output MC needs plenty of clean gain to reach line level with a good noise floor. A high-output MC or a hot MM benefits from less gain to avoid overloading the next stage. With input sensitivity from 0.1mV (MC) to 10.0mV (MM), the PH-5.2 works with virtually any moving magnet or moving coil cartridge in use today.
Two Cartridge Memories
The PH-5.2 stores two complete cartridge configurations, one MM and one MC, and recalls either instantly from the Settings menu. If you run two tonearms, swap headshells, or keep an MM for everyday listening and an MC for serious sessions, you never have to re-enter load and gain settings. Select MM or MC and the PH-5.2 restores your settings.
Balanced and Unbalanced Outputs
The PH-5.2 provides both balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA outputs, so it suits any preamplifier or integrated amplifier. Balanced connections offer common-mode noise rejection, which is a real advantage for longer runs or more complex systems. RCA keeps things simple for traditional setups.
Its low 50Ω output impedance means the PH-5.2 can drive interconnects cleanly over any cable length, with minimal risk of treble roll-off from cable capacitance. This gives you real freedom when planning your rack layout.
Infrasonic Filter: 10Hz at 36dB per Octave
The PH-5.2 also includes an infrasonic filter at 10Hz with a steep 36dB per octave slope. It protects your amplification and speakers from sub-sonic rumble and the warp-induced low-frequency energy that warped pressings can produce. Those signals can make woofer cones pump visibly, waste amplifier power and muddy the midrange. Because the filter sits at 10Hz with such a steep slope, it removes that energy while leaving genuine low bass untouched.
How the PH-5.2 Should Sound in Your System
Gold Note's design goals give a clear picture of the PH-5.2's character. Expect a low, quiet background that lets micro-detail emerge naturally. The top end should sound clean and open, thanks to the enhanced power supply. Overall, the presentation is relaxed but authoritative, so you can listen for hours without fatigue while still feeling the dynamic swing of a live recording.
Above all, the PH-5.2 is designed for honesty. It doesn't add a flavour of its own. Instead, it gets out of the way so the qualities of your cartridge, turntable and pressings come through. Precise loading, accurate EQ and real-time adjustment help you get your front end performing at its best.
