Pro-Ject E1.2 Review: The EISA Award-Winning Plug & Play Turntable with Pick it MM E Cartridge

Welcome to our Pro-Ject E1.2 Review, where we take a close look at the turntable the EISA jury crowned Best Value Turntable 2025–2026. Pro-Ject has spent four decades building record players for everyone from first-time spinners to dedicated analogue collectors. With the E1.2, they've focused all that experience on one question: how do you deliver genuine audiophile performance at an entry-level price without asking the listener to do anything more than drop the needle? Having worked through the engineering, the specifications and the design philosophy, we think Pro-Ject has answered that question very convincingly.
If you're weighing up the E1.2 against other options, or want to know which version suits your system, our team at The Audio Tailor is always happy to talk vinyl. Call us on 1300 308 711 and we'll point you in the right direction.

The Turntable for Everyone
Most vinyl lovers remember the first time a record sounded the way it was meant to. It wasn't thin or distant. The music felt present, warm, dynamic and alive. The Pro-Ject E1.2 is built to bring that moment forward for as many listeners as possible, without the fiddly setup or corner-cutting that has often come with entry-level decks.
Pro-Ject sums up the brief in five points: great sound, simple design, quality components, audiophile technology and handmade in the EU. It's an honest description. The E1.2 isn't a lifestyle gadget dressed up as a hi-fi product. It's a proper turntable built on the same principles that drive Pro-Ject's more expensive designs: mechanical stability, low resonance and careful component matching.

A Brand New 730g Die-Cast Aluminium Platter
Every good vinyl front end starts with a stable, quiet platform that resists resonance. The stylus reads groove modulations measured in microns, so any spurious vibration in the platter ends up in the signal. That shows up as smeared detail, a muddier bass and a raised noise floor.
Pro-Ject's answer is a new 730g die-cast aluminium main platter. Its mass resists the micro-vibrations that corrupt the groove signal, and it's damped to absorb energy rather than ring with it. Pro-Ject also adds a precision-balancing step during manufacture so the platter spins evenly, without the wobble and drift that weaker designs show. Mass also adds rotational inertia, which helps the platter hold a steady speed. That matters for pitch stability on sustained piano notes and long string passages.
Beneath the main platter is a precision glass fibre reinforced ABS sub platter, made to a 0.001% tolerance. It rides on a stainless steel axle and ball in a bronze bushing bearing. This is the quiet mechanical base the rest of the system depends on. A low-noise bearing means less rumble reaching the stylus, which lets low-level detail come through: the decay of a cymbal, the breath before a vocal line, the ambience of a live recording.
Speed is handled by a belt drive with electronic speed control. The belt isolates the platter from motor vibration. Electronic switching means you change between 33 and 45rpm at the touch of a button, with no need to move the belt across a pulley by hand. Pro-Ject quotes wow and flutter of ±0.23% at 33rpm and ±0.21% at 45rpm, with a signal-to-noise figure of 65dB.
CNC-Machined Aluminium Tonearm: No Hollow Spaces, No Compromises

The tonearm is where the E1.2 punches well above its price. Rather than a conventional cast arm, Pro-Ject uses CNC-machined aluminium. This removes the hollow spaces found in typical cast designs, which can trap unwanted resonances and vibrations. The result is cleaner, more stable groove tracing from the first play, an engineering principle you'd usually expect much further up the price ladder.
At its core is a gimbal design with a precision pinpoint bearing system featuring zero play. Bearing play is a quiet problem in budget tonearms. Any looseness lets the arm chatter as it tracks, which blurs transients and smears the stereo image. With a zero-play bearing, the arm moves smoothly and under control across the record, giving clean, well-resolved sound and a stable soundstage.
Pro-Ject has also rethought the counterweight. The oversized-diameter TPE decoupled counterweight sits closer to the moving parts than a conventional design. Concentrating mass near the pivot improves balance and tracking, which Pro-Ject says brings better detail and bass response. The TPE decoupling helps stop resonances in the counterweight from travelling back down the arm tube to the cartridge.
Tonearm Geometry
- Effective arm length: 218.5mm
- Effective arm mass: 7.0g
- Overhang: 22mm
The key point is that you never have to worry about any of these numbers. Every E1.2 tonearm arrives expertly adjusted at the factory, with the cartridge fitted, aligned and set to the correct tracking force. You won't need tools, guesswork or an alignment protractor. You plug it in and press play.
Premium Pick it MM E Cartridge: The Cartridge That Makes the Difference
The phono cartridge is the most sonically critical part of any turntable. It turns the physical modulations of the groove into an electrical signal, and the quality of that conversion sets the ceiling for everything downstream. Your amplifier and speakers can't recover detail the cartridge never picked up.
That's why it matters that the E1.2 ships with the Pick it MM E, a premium moving magnet cartridge chosen for its ability to pull warm, smooth, detailed sound from any record in any genre. Here's what makes it work:
- Miniature neodymium generator magnet: A low-mass generating system reduces inertia, so the stylus assembly can follow the groove more faithfully for improved tracking accuracy.
- Conical diamond stylus: A forgiving, well-proven profile that delivers warm, smooth reproduction with low background noise. It's ideal for collections that mix brand-new pressings with well-loved second-hand finds.
- Highly damped ABS body: Reduces vibration-induced colouration to a vanishing level, so what you hear is the record rather than the cartridge housing.
As with the tonearm, Pro-Ject's factory technicians pre-adjust every cartridge before shipment. Tracking force, anti-skate and azimuth are correctly set from the moment the turntable arrives. For many first-time owners, poorly set tracking force or anti-skate is what leads to distortion, mistracking and premature record wear. With the E1.2, that risk is designed out from day one.

How the Pro-Ject E1.2 Sounds
The design adds up to a clear sonic personality: warm, smooth and refreshingly free of background noise. The EISA jury praised its “robust bass and fulsome vocals”, and that matches what the engineering suggests. The heavy, damped platter and the counterweight's improved tracking give the low end real weight and authority. The low-mass Pick it MM E generator and conical stylus keep the midrange full-bodied and the treble easy on the ear.
This is not a lean, analytical presentation that exposes every flaw in a pressing. It's an engaging, musical sound that invites you to play one more side. EISA put it well when they called the E1.2 “a disc spinner equally suited to modern pop releases and vintage jazz.” Whether you're spinning a fresh 180g reissue or a decades-old Blue Note original, the E1.2 aims to serve the music rather than the spec sheet.
“Although an affordable turntable designed to make vinyl accessible to all, Pro-Ject's E1.2 doesn't skimp on quality. Offering robust bass and fulsome vocals, this is a disc spinner that's equally suited to modern pop releases and vintage jazz. The plug 'n' play design includes a pre-adjusted Pick it MM E cartridge to take the sting out of setup, and the step-by-step manual helps vinyl novices get quickly on their way.”
EISA, Best Value Turntable Award 2025–2026
Handmade in the Czech Republic
Every Pro-Ject E1.2 is handmade at Pro-Ject's own factory in the Czech Republic. Skilled technicians handle every stage, from chassis preparation and painting to motor control assembly and final turntable assembly. At this price, that level of hands-on craftsmanship is rare. It's a big part of why Pro-Ject decks have such a strong reputation for consistency and longevity.
The thoughtful touches continue underneath. Four damping feet decouple the turntable from its supporting surface and reduce the risk of acoustic feedback. This matters if your deck will sit on a sideboard or shelf near your speakers. An acrylic dustcover comes as standard, along with a 15V DC / 0.8A power supply and a 7” single adapter for your 45s. Power consumption is a frugal 4.5W.

Choosing Your Pro-Ject E1.2: Standard, Phono or BT
One of the E1.2's greatest strengths is its flexibility. Pro-Ject offers three versions, so you can match the turntable to the system you already own or plan to build.
E1.2 (Standard)
This is the foundation model, with everything described above, in Black, White and Walnut foil finishes. It's ideal if your amplifier already has a phono input, or if you plan to add a dedicated external phono stage to grow your system later.
E1.2 Phono
This version adds a switchable, high-quality built-in phono preamplifier, so you can connect directly to any line or CD input on an amplifier or active speakers without a separate phono stage. Because it's switchable, you can bypass it later if you decide to upgrade to an outboard phono stage. It's a smart, future-proof choice. Available in Black, White and Walnut.
E1.2 BT
This version adds a built-in Bluetooth 5.4 transmitter with aptX HD, letting you stream vinyl wirelessly to any Bluetooth speaker, headphone or amplifier, with no cables needed. It comes in Black and Walnut foil finishes, plus special handpainted Satin finishes on an upgraded, heavier MDF chassis as part of Pro-Ject's Colourful Audio range.
Not sure which version suits your setup? It depends on your amplifier, speakers and how you like to listen. That's exactly the kind of question our team loves answering. Give us a call on 1300 308 711 or email sales@theaudiotailor.com.au and we'll help you choose.
