Rega Planar 6 RS Edition MC Review: Planar 8 Engineering Meets Moving Coil Magic
In this Rega Planar 6 RS Edition MC review, we take a close look at what may be one of the most compelling 'turnkey' moving coil vinyl front-ends Rega has ever assembled. Pairing the special edition Planar 6 RS, which inherits key Planar 8 engineering, with the factory-fitted and pre-aligned Rega Ania moving coil cartridge, this package promises the detail, speed and three-dimensional imaging of MC playback without the usual set-up headaches. Having spent a great deal of time with Rega's Planar family over the years, we can say this one gets the pulse racing.

Rega Planar 6 RS Edition MC Review: The Short Version
Rega describes this combination as 'forty years of tonearm mastery' and 'moving coil performance without moving coil compromise'. That is a bold claim, but the ingredient list backs it up: the RB880 tonearm with a custom stainless balance weight normally reserved for the Planar 8, the custom-matched Neo Mk2 PSU, the ultra-lightweight Tancast 8 plinth, a 16mm dual-layer float glass Opti-white platter, twin Reference EBLT drive belts, and Rega's hand-wound Ania MC cartridge, fitted and aligned at the factory in Southend-on-Sea. It is, quite genuinely, a turntable and cartridge pairing that is greater than the sum of its already exceptional parts.
If you are weighing up where this sits relative to the standard Planar 6 or a step up to the Planar 8, our team is always happy to talk it through. Give us a call on 1300 308 711 and we will help map it against your system and listening priorities.
A Special Edition Built for Serious Listeners
The Planar 6 RS Edition represents the pinnacle of the Planar 6 lineage. Rega has kept the classic, much-loved Planar silhouette and smoked dustcover, but beneath that familiar exterior sits a level of engineering pulled straight from the next tier up. This is classic Rega philosophy in action: low mass, high rigidity, and an obsessive focus on removing anything that stores or transmits unwanted energy into the stylus-groove interface.
Tancast 8 Plinth and Double Brace Technology
The Tancast 8 plinth uses an ultra-lightweight foam core with an aluminium skin. Rega's long-standing view is that a heavy plinth simply stores energy and releases it back into the system; a light, stiff plinth gives that energy nowhere to hide. Combined with Rega's Double Brace Technology, a structurally optimised stressed beam assembly that links the critical points between the main bearing and tonearm mount, the result is a rigid, inert path between platter and arm. In practice, this is the foundation for the clean, unsmeared low-level detail that a moving coil cartridge thrives on.
16mm Float Glass Platter
The 16mm dual-layer float glass platter in Opti-white clear not only looks stunning, it provides consistent flywheel mass and a stable, flat surface for the record. Spinning under a dimmed lamp, there is something genuinely special about it, but the real benefit is sonic: even, stable rotation that underpins pitch accuracy and timing.

The RB880 Tonearm: Planar 8 Engineering in a Planar 6
For many listeners, this is the headline. The RB880 is not a tonearm you would normally find on a Planar 6. Borrowed directly from the Planar 8, it features Rega's ultra-low friction precision bearings, hand-polished bearing housings and that custom stainless balance weight. It is hand-assembled, factory-fitted and expertly aligned.
Why does it matter? A moving coil cartridge with an ultra-low mass moving element is extraordinarily revealing of what the arm is doing. Bearing friction and chatter translate directly into lost micro-detail, softened transients and a less stable soundstage. The RB880's rigidity and low-friction bearings give the Ania a stable, consistent platform to trace the groove, which is exactly what you want for tight imaging, crisp leading edges and the effortless tracking of dense, dynamic passages.
The Ania MC Cartridge: Welcome to the World of Moving Coils
The Rega Ania was inspired by the success of Rega's acclaimed Apheta and Aphelion MC designs, sharing the same complex hand-wound micro coil found throughout the range. Its brief was to bring true moving coil performance to a broader audience without compromising the engineering principles that define Rega's cartridges.
One of the World's Smallest MC Generators
At its heart is an iron micro cross assembly, hand-wound with 0.018mm fine wire and energised by high-power neodymium magnets. The cantilever is aluminium, carrying an elliptical profile diamond stylus. Rega's MC approach is distinctive: an undamped generator with no tie wire, using a rhomboid pivot system and an exclusive neodymium magnet assembly. The aim is an ultra-low mass moving element with exceptional freedom to trace the groove.
The sonic payoff is the very reason audiophiles graduate to moving coil: superb low-level detail retrieval, musical speed and genuinely three-dimensional imaging. Reverb tails hang in the air longer, instruments occupy more clearly defined spaces, and the sense of 'being there' on a well-recorded live LP is heightened considerably. Hi-Fi Choice put it succinctly:
'The Ania delivers a huge, effortlessly three-dimensional performance.'

A Body Engineered to Military Precision
The Ania's body is a story in itself. When the machined aluminium body of the Apheta 3 proved too costly for the Ania's target price, Rega's engineers turned to Polyphenylene Sulphide (PPS-Fortron), a 40% glass-filled polymer of remarkable hardness and dimensional stability. It is formed in the most complex high-pressure injection mould Rega has ever designed, made exclusively by specialist toolmakers working to military and medical precision tolerances. The mould tool alone took a full year to develop.
The result is an exceptionally rigid, accurate body featuring Rega's three-point fixing system for automatic overhang alignment on Rega tonearms. A CAD-designed clear rigid cover also protects the delicate internal wires during fitting. Of course, on the Planar 6 RS Edition MC, Rega has already done the fitting and alignment for you.
Ania Electrical Characteristics
With a nominal output of 350μV, an output impedance of 10Ω, a recommended load of 100Ω and 1000pF capacitance, the Ania calls for a high-gain MC phono stage. It tracks at a gentle 1.75–2.00g, with channel separation of ≥ –29dB. Not sure if your current phono stage is up to the task? Drop our team a line at sales@theaudiotailor.com.au and we will check compatibility for you.
Neo Mk2 PSU: Precision Speed, Custom-Matched
Speed stability is the bedrock of convincing vinyl replay, and Rega takes it seriously here. The Neo Mk2 power supply is custom-matched to each Planar 6 RS Edition individually and hand-tuned for optimal motor performance, offering a remarkable 0.01 RPM speed adjustment resolution. It drives a 24V synchronous low-noise motor, itself hand-tuned for minimal vibration, via a CNC twin drive pulley and twin Reference EBLT belts.
The audible benefits are steady pitch on sustained piano notes, a firm and confident bass line, and a quieter background from which the Ania's fine detail can emerge. The Neo Mk2 also shares Rega's new aluminium casework styling, giving it a premium, cohesive presence on the rack.

The Perfect Partner: Rega Fono MC Mk4 (Optional Extra)
Because the Ania is a moving coil cartridge, it needs a quality MC phono stage to shine, and Rega's own recommendation is the Fono MC Mk4. Built in the same Southend-on-Sea factory, it uses a Linear Systems LSK389 FET all-discrete input stage, chosen for ultra-low noise and linearity, a MUSE operational amplifier in the RIAA equalisation circuit, and polypropylene capacitors throughout the signal path.
Better still, its factory DIP switch settings are pre-configured for Rega MC cartridges: 100Ω loading, 1000pF capacitance and high gain (63.5dB). That makes it a true plug-and-play match for the Ania. Rear-panel DIP switches offer four resistance, two capacitance and two gain settings for flexibility with third-party cartridges down the track. Its aluminium casework matches the Neo Mk2 PSU, so the pair sit together beautifully. Hi-Fi Choice called it 'an outstanding affordable MC phono stage that delivers superb performance', naming it a Group Test Winner (November 2022).

Set-Up and Ownership
One of the most attractive aspects of this package is how much of the difficult work has been done for you. The Ania is factory-fitted and aligned on the RB880, the Neo Mk2 is matched to the deck, and everything required is in the box: turntable, cartridge, PSU, Rega PS1 wall power supply, smoked dustcover and twin Reference EBLT drive belts. For anyone who has ever nervously wrestled an MC cartridge onto a headshell, that alone is worth a great deal.
Add Rega's lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects on both the turntable and the cartridge, and the Planar 6 RS Edition MC becomes an investment you can make with real confidence.
