Floorstanding Speakers

Floorstanding speakers put the bass, midrange and treble drivers in one tall cabinet, and ours run from slim lounge room towers to Marten, Estelon and YG Acoustics designs for dedicated rooms. They suit anyone with the floor space who wants scale from a pair of speakers alone. In between sit Bowers & Wilkins, Wharfedale, Monitor Audio, Triangle, Acoustic Energy, Richter and Polk.

Two-way, 2.5-way and three-way tower speakers

A two-way splits the signal between a tweeter and a bass/mid driver, as in the Pylon Jade 20 and Marten Oscar Trio. A 2.5-way adds a second bass driver that only handles the lowest notes, the layout used in the Monitor Audio Bronze 300 (7G) and Triangle Borea BR07. A three-way gives the midrange a driver of its own, the aim being that no single cone has to cover too wide a range. The Wharfedale EVO5.3 and EVO5.4, Acoustic Energy AE320.2, Triangle Borea BR08 and Pylon Jade 30, with its 15-inch paper-cone woofer, all take that route.

Richter's S7SE models take a different approach. The Wizard S7SE, Dragon S7SE and Excalibur S7SE give the bass its own chamber, separate from the midrange and tweeter.

From the lounge room to the listening room

For living spaces, cabinet width matters as much as height. The Bowers & Wilkins 704 S3 is the slimmest floorstander the company makes, at 165mm wide, and Acoustic Energy's AE309.2 is a slim-line design. Wharfedale's Diamond 12.3i and 12.4i, Monitor Audio's Silver 200, 300 and 500 (7G) and Polk's Reserve R600 and R700 cover the broad middle of the range, and the 603 S3 is the largest tower in the Bowers & Wilkins 600 Series.

Further up, the Bowers & Wilkins 703 S3 brings Tweeter-on-Top to the 703 for the first time, and the 800 Series Diamond runs from the 804 D5 to the 801 D5. Marten's Coltrane models and the Mingus Orchestra pair diamond and ceramic drivers with first-order crossovers, and Estelon's X Diamond MK2 sits in a curved, marble-based cabinet with no parallel surfaces.

Questions we get asked

Do I still need a subwoofer?

Not always. Towers have more cabinet volume for bass than standmounts, so plenty of owners run them alone for music. A home cinema or a large room is where one of our subwoofers handling the LFE channel tends to come in, and we can talk through whether yours calls for one.

How big a room do tower speakers need?

Makers often give a guide. Estelon sizes the X Diamond MK2 for rooms of 25 to 80 square metres, while the AE309.2 is described as suiting medium to large rooms. Placement away from walls matters too, so allow some breathing room behind and beside each speaker.

Floorstanding or bookshelf speakers?

Towers have more cabinet volume and driver area for a similar footprint to a pair on stands. If your room is small or the speakers need to sit near a wall, bookshelf speakers are worth a look first.

Do you sell used floor standing speakers?

Yes. Pre-loved pairs are listed alongside new ones, and our pre-loved speakers and subwoofers collection brings the pre-loved range together in one place.
