Speaker Cables

Our speaker cables cover the run from amplifier to speaker, from per-metre cable you terminate yourself to factory-terminated pairs and bi-wire jumpers, made by Kimber Kable, AudioQuest, Inakustik, Montaudio, Zavfino, SVS and Tierium. The range suits anyone wiring a stereo system, a home theatre or a whole-house install.

Per-metre speaker cable, spools and terminated pairs

Per-metre cable suits runs under floors, along skirting boards and through walls. Inakustik's Premium 2.5mm and 4.0mm (including a flat 4.0mm and a silver-plated version), AudioQuest X2 in 14 AWG long-grain copper, and Tierium Premium LSZH in 12, 14 and 16 AWG with two or four cores are all sold this way. For installs, Montaudio's Chatham CH-1 comes on 50m and 100m spools, and Tierium's low smoke zero halogen jacket is aimed at wall cavities and other enclosed spaces.

Terminated speaker cables arrive with banana plugs or spades fitted. That covers Kimber Kable's 4TC, 4PRvs, 8PRvs, Carbon 16 and Carbon 18XL, the AudioQuest Rocket 11, 22, 33, 44 and 88, Inakustik's LS Micro AIR and AIR models, and Montaudio's Chatham SH-1 and Waiheke S-Ultra.

Gauge, geometry and conductor metal

Speaker cable carries far more current than an interconnect, so gauge matters here, particularly on long runs and with low-impedance speakers. The range runs from 16 AWG install cable up to Kimber Kable's Carbon 18XL at 8 AWG per lead, with AudioQuest Lone Ranger in solid 12 AWG and Zavfino Prima MkII at 9 AWG.

Construction is where the brands part ways. Kimber Kable's geometry runs from the braided speaker cable of the 4TC and 8TC to the 16-wire counter-opposed helix in Carbon 18XL. AudioQuest's Lone Ranger and Brave Heart use ZERO-Tech, with each polarity in its own round jacket, while Inakustik's LS-1205, LS-2405 and LS-4005 AIR suspend the conductors in an air helix with connectors pressed on rather than soldered. Copper is the norm, and silver appears in Zavfino Silver Dart, Montaudio Waiheke S-Ultra and the silver-plated Inakustik cable.

Questions we get asked

What gauge speaker cable do I need?

Run length and speaker impedance decide it, since longer runs and lower impedance both favour thicker cable. As a rough guide, thinner cable such as 2.5mm speaker cable is common for shorter runs and ceiling speakers, while 12 AWG and heavier is typical for long runs and demanding floorstanders. The team can work through your run lengths with you.

Should I bi-wire my speakers?

Only if your speakers have two pairs of terminals. Bi-wire versions of Kimber Kable 8TC and 8PRvs, AudioQuest's Rocket Single BiWire options and Montaudio Stewart SR run separate conductors to the bass and treble terminals. If you're running a single cable into bi-wirable speakers, jumpers from Kimber Kable, Inakustik and Zavfino replace the stamped metal plates most speakers ship with.

Banana plugs or spades?

Bananas push into the end of a binding post and are quick to swap, while spades clamp under the post's nut. Many models here come with either, so check the terminals on your amplifier and speakers first.

Whether you're wiring bookshelf speakers on stands or floorstanding speakers, tell us the run lengths and terminals and we'll talk through gauge and termination, along with the RCA cables on the source side. Call the team or visit our Murarrie showroom, and call or message first if you'd like a demo arranged.
