Electrocompaniet EC 5 Review: The Stereo Reference Preamplifier That Redefines Signal Purity
There are moments in high-end audio when a manufacturer stops iterating and starts redefining. This Electrocompaniet EC 5 review is about one of those moments. After ten years of development in Tau, Norway, Electrocompaniet has delivered the Electrocompaniet EC 5 Stereo Reference Preamplifier. It is a fully discrete, dual-mono, pure Class A line stage with a quoted 0.0002% THD+N, a 113dB signal-to-noise ratio and a proprietary, fully electronic volume control that offers 1000 steps at 0.1dB resolution. If you have ever wondered what happens when the preamplifier simply gets out of the way, keep reading.

Electrocompaniet EC 5 Review at a Glance
The EC 5 is a flagship stereo preamplifier. Its whole design brief comes down to one idea: absolute signal integrity. It does not add warmth, and it does not editorialise. It tries to pass the signal from your source to your power amplifier exactly as it arrived, at every volume setting. That last point matters more than most people realise, and it is where the EC 5 genuinely breaks new ground.

A Decade in the Making: The Volume Control That Changes Everything
Every preamplifier has to attenuate the signal. In most designs, attenuation is also where transparency quietly leaks away.
- Potentiometers rely on a wiper dragging across a resistive track.
- Switched resistor ladders and relay attenuators sound cleaner, but they still route the signal through different contacts and resistor combinations at each step.
Either way, the electrical topology of the signal path changes as you turn the dial. Impedance shifts, phase behaviour shifts, and even the physical path length changes. These effects are subtle, but they are measurable, and to a trained ear they affect the timing and spatial cues that build a convincing soundstage.
Electrocompaniet's answer took ten years to perfect. The EC 5's in-house volume control is fully electronic and removes every mechanical switch, relay and stepped-attenuator contact from the audio path. Crucially, the signal passes through a fixed-length path at all settings, through a single resistor. Impedance, phase and path length stay constant whether you are at a late-night whisper or a full orchestral crescendo.
In practical listening terms, the soundstage no longer moves with the volume knob. Instrument placement, centre-image focus and the layered depth of a well-made recording stay locked in place. Many systems sound spatially "right" only at one sweet-spot level and collapse slightly when turned down. The EC 5 is engineered so that holographic presence survives at every setting.
The resolution is equally impressive. A thousand steps of roughly 0.1dB, with a high-resolution range from –73dB to +20dB, let you set level with surgical precision. Channel balance and relative microdynamics are left untouched. For anyone who level-matches sources carefully or listens critically at modest volumes, this is a quiet revolution.

Fully Discrete, Dual-Mono, Pure Class A: The Architecture
Pure Class A Throughout
Class A operation means the output devices conduct across the entire signal cycle, so crossover distortion simply never occurs. It is the least efficient way to run a circuit, which is why the EC 5 draws 80W at idle. It is also, for many listeners, the most musically natural. Electrocompaniet keeps every gain stage in Class A, and it does so with discrete components rather than op-amp chips. That gives the engineers full control over every transistor and every operating point.
True Dual-Mono Power
Each channel has its own independent power supply, fed by one of two 80VA toroidal transformers. Behind each transformer sits 15,000µF of storage capacitance and three stages of noise filtering and regulation. A demanding transient in the left channel cannot modulate the supply rails of the right. The result is a quoted channel separation of more than 120dB, which keeps left-right imaging vivid and lateral placement precise, even at low listening levels.
The chassis itself is divided into shielded upper (analogue) and lower (power supply) compartments. This physically isolates the delicate signal circuitry from the magnetic and electrical noise of the transformers.
AmpliWire Topology and Direct Coupling
Electrocompaniet's AmpliWire topology pairs high open-loop bandwidth with deliberately low global negative feedback. Rather than using heavy feedback to correct a sluggish circuit, it relies on a circuit that is inherently linear and fast. The benefits are naturally low distortion, excellent phase coherence across the audible band and none of the hardened, "over-corrected" character some high-feedback designs exhibit.
The EC 5 is also direct coupled, with no capacitors in the signal path. Remove the coupling caps and you remove their dielectric signature. That helps explain the extraordinary 0.5Hz to 450kHz frequency response. Bass extends effortlessly below audibility with no phase shift creeping into the low octaves, and the treble is open and airy without a hint of strain.

The Numbers Behind the Music
Specifications never tell the whole story, but the EC 5's are worth pausing over.
- THD+N of 0.0002%: Distortion and noise combined sit far below the threshold of audibility.
- SNR of 113dB (ref. 1V, 20–20kHz, A-weighted): The background is jet black, so low-level detail like reverb tails, breath and room ambience emerges from genuine silence.
- Low DC output (under 1mV): Your power amplifier and loudspeakers receive a clean, stable signal.
- 10Vrms maximum input and output with up to 20dB of gain: There is vast headroom for any source and any power amplifier.
Put simply, the measurements confirm what the design philosophy promises: a preamplifier that adds nothing to the signal and takes nothing away from it.
Connectivity and Real-World Usability
Flagship preamps sometimes treat practicality as an afterthought. The EC 5 does not. The I/O is generous and balanced-first, which suits serious systems.
- Inputs: 4 × balanced (XLR) and 2 × single-ended per channel, with source switching handled by a proprietary fully electronic input selector that also avoids relays and mechanical switches
- Outputs: 2 × balanced and 1 × single-ended per channel, ideal for bi-amping or adding a subwoofer
- Tape/record outputs: 1 × balanced and 1 × single-ended per channel
- System integration: 2 × 12V trigger inputs, 3 × 12V trigger outputs, an IR output and a selectable IR sensor (internal, external or inactive)
- Ethernet: For app control and future firmware updates
- Ground screw: For external system grounding, a welcome touch when chasing down hum in complex setups
The output stage is described as "bulletproof". With a 22Ω output impedance, it will happily drive 600Ω loads and long interconnect runs, so you can place monoblocks right beside your speakers and keep speaker cables short.
Day-to-day use is a pleasure. The 7-inch IPS colour display is bright and legible from the listening seat. The large, ball-bearing-mounted volume wheel set into the acrylic front panel has a reassuring, luxurious action. You also get balance control, source level matching and source naming, and Electrocompaniet's own in-house IR remote is included. Internal over-temperature and DC fault protection add peace of mind, and auto-selecting 115/230VAC mains is another sign of thoughtful engineering.

How the EC 5 Should Sound in Your System
Everything about the EC 5 points towards one sonic signature: the absence of one. Pure Class A gain, low-feedback AmpliWire circuitry, direct coupling, isolated dual-mono supplies and a constant-topology volume control work together towards transparency. What reaches your power amplifier should be the recording itself: the musicians, the microphones, the acoustic of the room.
You can expect three qualities in particular.
- Exceptional soundstage stability: The centre image stays rock-solid and instruments hold their positions as you adjust level.
- Effortless low-level detail: This comes courtesy of the vanishingly low noise floor.
- Tight, deep, phase-coherent bass: Direct coupling and generous power supply reserves deliver it.
As Electrocompaniet puts it, the EC 5 does not create a soundstage. It reveals the one that was already there.
System matching is still everything at this level. Our team at The Audio Tailor can talk you through partnering the EC 5 with the right power amplification and loudspeakers for your room. Give us a call on 1300 308 711 and we will happily share our thoughts.

Who Is the Electrocompaniet EC 5 For?
- The reference-system builder: You have invested in serious power amps and loudspeakers, and you want the control centre to be the most transparent link in the chain.
- The imaging obsessive: If holographic depth and pinpoint placement are what you listen for, the constant-topology volume control was designed for you.
- The low-volume critical listener: Many systems lose their magic when turned down. The EC 5 is engineered to keep spatial cues and channel separation intact at every level.
- The multi-source, balanced-system owner: Four balanced inputs, dual balanced outputs and full trigger and IR integration make it ideal for complex setups with streamers, DACs, phono stages and bi-amped speakers.
- The Electrocompaniet loyalist: It keeps the brand's iconic aesthetic, upgraded with meaningful modern technology.

The Verdict: Ten Years Well Spent
The Electrocompaniet EC 5 is not an incremental update. It is a statement of what a preamplifier should be. By solving the long-ignored problem of volume-dependent signal topology, and by building that solution into a fully discrete, dual-mono, pure Class A platform with formidable power supplies, Electrocompaniet has created a control centre that makes itself invisible. The imaging stays put, the background stays silent and the music arrives intact. For the serious audiophile building a true reference system, the EC 5 belongs at the very top of the shortlist.
